Since the port of San Cristobal de La Habana Village was vital for all the trade between Spain and the New World, a system of fortresses was built for its defense: the Castle of the Royal Force, the Morro Castle, the San Salvador de la Punta Fort, the San Lázaro Tower, the Atarés Castle and the Santa Dorotea de la Chorrera Tower. These fortresses are part of the area that was granted the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
